Last year I went to an estate sale in a 1961 house, which appeared to have terrazzo in every room.  It really stood out.

In my fantasy world, where I am wealthy enough to build my own custom house, I want terrazzo everywhere, preferably with heating underneath. I figure you can always lay down a rug in certain areas if necessary.

There’s usually not that many, but polished floors and recent rains means slip mitigation is critical. I don’t know if I'd want to give up the look for a permanently safer flooring material.

I like terrazzo floors in civic applications. A lot of the older schools we go into to do renovations have them and they’re great, there’s just no budget to be able to do that kinda stuff anymore.

Unfortunately, that’s not the timescales which Architects working in the education field are allowed to work at anymore.

Hell, by the time we walk into most of these school  districts the “deferred maintenance” has gone on so long that we have to replace things on the verge of failure.

Superintendents and school boards need to look at their maintenance and repair budgets before skimping out. Our district has beautiful, original terrazzo floors in schools 50-100 years old. In our newer schools, the tile had to be replaced in as little as 10 years, some multiple times.

That is a cool detail, guessing it was saved because of the expense of removing it and the ease of covering with a mat.

Yeah, but trying to scrounge up another million dollars now is a lot harder than $300k every 10 years.
